Playful Exploration Reduces Anxiety
For many pediatric patients, visiting a hospital can be a stressful experience where they are nervous about upcoming treatment and unfamiliar with the environment. Left unaddressed, this anxiety can lead to negative short- and long-term effects, such as healthcare avoidance. While pre-procedural education effectively reduces anxiety, standard preparation has traditionally relied on basic documents with text and images alongside clinical consultations.
To better support young patients, a mobile gaming platform was developed to offer a gamified, immersive way to virtually explore the hospital before an in-person visit. By providing an engaging medium for users to familiarize themselves with new hospital environments prior to their arrival, the platform aims to significantly reduce pre-procedural stress.

From Virtual to Reality
Surgery, cast removal, and MRI scans have all been identified as stressful procedures for patients. For many children, visiting a hospital can feel foreign and intimidating. To alleviate this, the mobile game allows users to select an avatar and navigate from a virtual home to a hospital setting modeled after real healthcare environments.

The tool is customizable by the child's healthcare team, allowing patients to navigate directly to rooms similar to the ones they are scheduled to visit. It also serves as a research tool, enabling clinical teams to evaluate how different media formats, such as narrated images, 360-degree video, and virtual reality, impact patient experience and anxiety levels.

Making the Unknown Feel Familiar
By transforming unfamiliar healthcare settings into recognizable environments, the platform is currently undergoing evaluation to assess the impact of media fidelity and digital immersion on pediatric patient outcomes. Early findings suggest that interactive virtual reality education leads to a greater reduction in pre-procedural anxiety compared to traditional media formats, demonstrating the power of digital immersion in pediatric care.
